Excellent overview of the politics of race, envy, and opportunity. Thank you very much, Dr. Sowell. Your writing is like a breath of fresh air in an otherwise odorous fog of self-serving blather.

Not only should wage rates not be the business of the feds, a mandated minimum wage only helps those who collect it for a short period of time because it is inflationary. If a sandwich shop owner adds $2/hour (roughly 20%), he has to come up with that cash somewhere, and very few sandwich shop owners make enough to absorb even a quarter of that increase without raising the price of their sandwiches. Same with the butcher, the baker, and the baby food maker. In no time at all, that minimum wage earner now faces higher prices on every consumable and is in the same position as before. The minimum wage, like most unions, is a relic of the past, like buggy whips.
Another excellent column on one of my favorite topics, Star! Hearing any Democrat claiming all we need is to throw more money at education, when we already spend more per pupil than any other industrialized country (with much poorer results) is the story of trading our kids' futures for votes. Let our tax dollars devoted to education FOLLOW THE STUDENTS. When public schools can't compete with private/parochial schools, then they should step aside.

You can't eliminate racism with racist rules and laws. Great article, Mark!

I'll go along with the million dollars for one term as long as it does not include a lifetime salary/pension and ongoing perquisites beyond what one would get in private industry.
