What is surprising is that the police have the air and ground space covered, but no attempt to look underground in the sewer system! Hopefully someone will connect the so-called dots!

we don't know that they aren't. Further, the perpetrator was being closely followed by police, and likely dd not have time to lift a 50 pound sewer cover to get into the system.
