I'm actually a big supporter of the Electoral College, as it was originally conceived. The Founding Fathers clearly DID NOT WANT to have direct election of the President, feeling (correctly) that such a system would inevitably lead to mob rule, with a tyrant leading the mob by the nose. In the Electoral College System, the STATE LEGISLATURES choose the electors, using any danged method they please. Then each elector would vote in whatever manner his conscience guided him. I would love to see a state legislature try to take back its constitutionally-authorized power, cancel popular elections for President, and simply choose some fine, upstanding citizens to meet and cast their votes as they see fit.
