You bring up a whole other column that needs to be written (well, Stossel's probably already written it). America has largely retrogressed to the GUILD System of the Middle Ages; it seems practically every job requires in-class training and tests, before you can earn a dime. It used to be that you could learn by Apprenticeship, rather than classroom time and high-stakes exam. Abe Lincoln, for example, never took a class in law; he apprenticed. In Apprenticeship, you earn while you learn. In our new Guild System, you pay and pay and pay before you make your first dime. This isn't just the big-money professions, either. In some states, you have to take classes and be "certified" to be a flower-arranger!

There was a time in Virginia when you could be a "law reader" and take the state bar exam. If you passed you would get your law license. All without a law degree. Don't know if that's still true or not.

Higher Education has become one of the biggest money scams in America. Costs are growing by 10% every year and the system is being rigged to require a degree for everything. Pretty soon, you will need to BUY a degree in sanitary engineering to get a job cleaning toilets. The operative word here is "BUY"!

The Olympics have gone smoothly despite -- gasp! -- America's team wearing clothing made in China at the opening ceremony.

"I'm so upset," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "Take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile, and burn them. ... We have people in the textile industry who are desperate for jobs."

Here, Reid demonstrates economic cluelessness. It seems logical that Americans lose if American clothing is made overseas. But that's nonsense. First, it's no surprise the uniforms were made in China. Most clothing is. That's fine. It saves money. We invest the savings in other things,...
