Petraeus?!!?! Ummm, no. The VP slot should be used for the 'next' candidate -- the one who would run for President in 8 years. Give the new person exposure, experience, and name-recognition so that they are able to run for the top slot in 2020. Why? Because otherwise you end up in 2008 again, trying to find someone, anyone, to put on the ticket, rather than a person who has been groomed to be your party's standard-bearer. For me, that person really ought to be Marco Rubio.
