While I greatly respect and admire Dr. Sowell and enjoyed his books and articles, I must correct his assertion of the origin of the island-hopping strategy employed by American forces in the Pacific during World War II. The historic consensus is that while MacArthur may claim he developed it as he has claimed much else falsely during his career, the fact is that the U. S. Navy under Admirals Ernest King and Chester Nimitz developed and implemented this successful approach to winning the Pacific War. Their objective was to develop air bases close enough to the Japanese homeland to allow the upcoming B-29 to accomplish strategic bombing to bring the Japanese to their knees.
