I agree with you about consensus. However, your 1492 anecdote is false. Prior to 1492, educated persons knew the earth was round. The had known it for hundreds of years based on how ships rise and sink on the horizon. In fact, they had calculated the size of the earth quite accurately. Those who knew this laughed at Columbus because his idea to reach India by sailing West would be a much longer voyage than traveling East. See, e.g.
