The whole issue deals with protecting the sanctity of marriage from a spiritual or religious sense vs. a government sanctioned contract. I'm just attempting a solution. Make the government angle purely contractual. Leave it up to individuals and churches to define marriage for themselves. This would satisfy most people on both sides, and remove a dividing factor used by politicians for their own gain and manipulation.
