Judyann... The whole SS and Medicare programs were a ponzi-scheme to begin with, and if Bernie Madoff goes to jail then it's illegal. Now that's off my chest... Congress had always used the tax revenue from SS tax for everything but paying pensions. It went to Welfare, Defense, infrastructure... it was used as FICA is used and congress would inturn budget annual sums of money to fund annual SS pension payments. Over time, fewer people have been born and SS revenues took in less while paying out to more retiring baby-boomers who rightly deserve every penny they are owed. It's a nutshell explanation... but that's what the system says. Bottom line, we were Bernied!!
