We need some out-of-the box thinking. Free up priviate enterprise to develop the massive amounts of oil/natural gas recently discovered to make us energy independent, reduce gas prices, provide jobs, and "lubricate" the private economy. Use the BILLIONS in Federal Royalties paid by the oil/gas producers to pay current retirees/everyone over say, 50, everything SS promised. Give everyone under that age, or indeed any age, the option of either opting out of SS, or forgoing SS payments in return for a tax credit equal to what SS "owes" you. Of course, for the above to work, we would also have to massively reduce Fed Government spending, whacking whole departments, and laying off Fed Workers. Great Opportunity to become self-reliant again!

We shoul also insist on an "everyone plays" rule whereby Federal Workers/Consgressmen/Senators/POTUS/SCOTUS have to ALL participate in whatever is foisted on the American public: No separate retirement fund, benefits, etc.

All prior promises to be rescinded, just as our SS benefits will be rescinded due to financial insolvency.

If they have the same benefits as we do, they are much more likely to find the courage to restore financial solvency.

You nailed it when you said no exceptions for anyone, from POTUS on down, would restore fiscal sanity. If we had had such a rule on the books during the Obamacare debate it would never have passed.

Some of the responses to my column last week, titled "Immoral Beyond Redemption," prove that Americans have been hoodwinked by Congress. Some readers protested my counting Social Security among government handout programs that can be described as Congress' taking what belongs to one American and giving to another, to whom it doesn't belong -- legalized theft. They argued that they worked for 45 years and paid into Social Security and that the money they now receive is theirs. These people have been duped and shouldn't be held totally accountable for such a belief. Let's look at it.

The Social Security pamphlet...
