Now I get my two cents in: When the French left Indochina, Ike and Matt Ridgway knew they had a problem looming. So they inserted a single regiment of Marines into NE Thailand. These jarheads had the Ho Chi Minh Trail interdicted and the entire North Vietnamese Army neutralized. And Victor Charlies could not be built into a meaningful force at all. The Communists then turned to assasination and terrorism. In trying to counter this, the Kennedy-McNamara-Wheeler-Westmoreland whizkids removed the interdicting force and the defecation encountered the oscillilation. Give me the do nothings like Ike and Coolidge. Keep the Boy Wonders would you?

Ordinarily, the news that a long overdue memorial to an historic American leader has been put on hold still again would come as a disappointment. But if you've seen the innocuous design for an Eisenhower memorial in the nation's capitol, the news may come as a relief -- and a welcome opportunity to start all over and try to get it right this time.

Innocuous doesn't begin to cover the emptiness, the blahness, the pomp meaninglessness of Frank Gehry's design for this "monument" that is the opposite of monumental. It's just a few saplings around what looks like an empty...
