As long as we're looking at maps, maybe Herman would benefit from glancing at one of the Ottoman Empire ca 1912. Since he believes maps equate to truth, perhaps he'll determine that what is now the State of Israel rightfully belongs to Turkey. By the same logic, I suppose the Norman French ought to find a few Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Celts and Danes and cede southern Great Britain to them. Would be good job for Herman to undertake. A Nobel for sure awaits him.

Classical explanations of conventional wars run something like this: An aggressor state seeks political advantage through military force. It has a hunch that the threatened target will likely either make concessions to avoid losing a war, or, if war breaks out, the resulting political gains will be worth the military costs to achieve victory.
