The Holy Father (John Paul II) made a speculative comment, not a definitive statement. Evolution is still not an article of faith; and because it is not the subject of divine revelation, pre-apostolic or apostolic, it never will be. Karol Wojtyla, God rest his soul, was a philosopher to the core, and it caught him unawares at some bad times.
