Such is not due to wars since then or the cost associated with the Reagan military buildup as many assert but instead is due to entitlement spending that is recipient-expectant along with being... utterly out of control. It started with Johnson's cleverly named Great Society Programs. These were neither 'great' nor of societal benefit. Instead and since their implementation they are the root cause of all that has emerged due to their existence. This includes aberrant behaviors that so damage recipients that most remain dysfunctional.. for life.

Not quite zero....but still a fraction of the current debt (our current debt is 50X the debt back in 1965).
For decades, it has been obvious that there are irreconcilable differences between Americans who want to control the lives of others and those who wish to be left alone. Which is the more peaceful solution: Americans using the brute force of government to beat liberty-minded people into submission or simply parting company? In a marriage, where vows are ignored and broken, divorce is the most peaceful solution. Similarly, our constitutional and human rights have been increasingly violated by a government instituted to protect them. Americans who support constitutional abrogation have no intention of mending their ways.
