column was good until the stupidity in the last paragraph. Considering that Jim Crow was still the law in the south, and was condoned (and of course implemented) by the Demoncrats like Johnson and Connor (and Kennedy)...., and that Nixon was in the forefront of equal rights for blacks (as were most republicans for 100 years by that point)....

You missed his point. Like Nixon, Romney is for equal rights. That didn't stop many democrats from trying to convince voters that the opposite was true.

Elder is saying that he is happy that, despite their political differences, his parents didn't stoop to the level of current democrats.

Republicans have always championed for Civil rights -look it up -It is the Santa Claus effect is like an aphrodisiac -hard to break .
Brandon, a 9-year-old black kid, attended a campaign rally hosted by Michelle Obama. A cameraman interviewed Brandon, who was there with his dad. "Why does (Obama) need to win?" he was asked. "Because if Mitt Romney wins," he replied, "we'll be going back to the crop fields. We'll be picking crops." Off-screen, his father could be heard laughing.

From whom does a 9-year-old hear that Obama's opponent is a racist who, to quote the Democratic National Committee chairwoman, wants "to literally drag us all the way back to Jim Crow laws"?

Brandon's father might alert his son to a recent column...
