Adding lots who will need NICU care via Obama Care could cost a lot - Factor in the cost of treating all of the possible lifelong disabilities and the years of lost productivity for the caregivers, and the real tab may top $50 billion, Waitzman says. A 2006 report by the National Academy of Sciences found that the 550,000 preemies born each year in the U.S. run up about $26 billion in annual costs, mostly related to care in NICUs. http://www.businessweek.com/stories/2008-06-11/million-dollar-babies.

The Pass program and ticket to work are both helps to get back to work. There are protections from losing benefits . It is harder if you only have SSI due to the long standing stricter regulations. Get the red book from the SSA www.ssa.gov/redbook/ Corporations have moved many jobs overseas and are still not hiring most people with disabilities. More people are claiming disability, but there still is little accessible housing or other supports to be more able to work since 1988 when the first ADA was introduced in Congress. In 1973 the passage of Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act banned discrimination on the basis of disability by recipients of federal funds.

The PASS program and Ticket to Work programs helps people with disabilites get back to work, ask SSA to send the redbook helps people work. States have Vocational rehabilitation agencies that can help , some do better than others. It is harder to move from SSI to work than it is from SSDI due to more restrictive income rules that have been there for years. Companies are still not hiring many people with disabilities and many Corporations have moved jobs to China India and other places, we see fewer opportunities overall. More disabled people is not something Politicians can control. More people allowed to get help and benefits is. There are a lot more children and others getting SSDI and SSI. Autism and war injuries
