Yes, it was. Letting them go bankrupt would have caused intense short-term pain. Bailing them out, is causing long-term pain by encouraging similar behavior. Did AIG know that sub-prime mortgage derivatives would loose value? Probably not. But they should have been prepared for the possibility. Since they weren't, they should pay the price, not the taxpayers. Bush really screwed up here.
