Republicans can avoid this by assuring Reid they will not oppose Democrats plans to go forward with raising meaningless (in terms of revenue) taxes on the "rich", borrowing and spending $1+ trillion per year, and driving energy costs through the roof with their war on fossil fuel. Republicans in congress should just state their objections, put their proposals on the record, and then abstain during voting to allow the Democrats to have their way. If the Democrats version of a Keynesian solution and renewable fuel utopia does not work and the economy collapses back into recession the Democrats need to own it. Besides, the only thing opposition will do is give the Democrats an issue to demagog in the mid-term elections.
