The major problem leading to poor learning outcomes is the student's home environment and statistically the worst environment is the single parent home which in urban areas is generally at or below the poverty line and headed by a female with little education and few skills. We expect the schools to fill the roles of both parent and teacher in the few hours they have the students each day which would be a challenge even for the mission impossible crew.
Chris Christie signed into law this week a reform to New Jersey’s 103-year-old teacher tenure law. The reform is bipartisan in nature, with multiple Democratic sponsors in the New Jersey’s legislature and the support of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA). The law, as pointed out by Teresa Shumay of the Heritage Foundation, is a step in the right direction .
