Ms Chavez does not take into account the concept of "compounding". IF social security had been invested properly, compounding would have assured the continued existence of the system. Since politicians "dipped at the public trough" and destroyed social security, they are responsible for its present state.

The City of Galveston, TX opted out of SS about 50 years ago, when it was still possible (hasn't been since 1973). They confiscated the same amount of money from paychecks and paid in the same amount from the city. City employees now receive pensions 240% of what SS would pay.

President Obama's second inaugural address will be full of lofty sentiments and promises to move us forward. But I'd like to suggest that instead of eloquent and uplifting rhetoric, the president do something unexpected and brave. What if he actually spoke frankly to the American people about the sacrifices that are needed from all of us if we are to secure our future and salvage our character?
