HAL: One of the best examples of the greatest generation was that a lot of young men and women loved their country without question. So many of those young people made the supreme sacrifice, setting aside plans and dreams because the country needed them. Unlike the despots of the world, our country did not claim any of those that we vanquished, but instead rebuilt them and offered our hand in friendship.
As for SS & Medicare...don't lay that at the feet of that generation. The great icon of the left...FDR, engineered that program...it was LBJ that introduced us to Medicare, food stamps and government houses, along with busing and a lot more entitlement programs in his war on poverty. It's high time to declare that war lost and put...

Thomas makes a terrific point when he speaks of living within one's means. All too many people watch their favorite TV show and the main characters seem to have all the material things one might need....except any kind of job.
When people become too dependent upon some government program, they become addicted to having some kind of check in the mail that will pay for whatever that program provides. In most cases, they merely are required to apply.
A good example of what this leads to is the plight of so many people in New Orleans after Katrina hit that city.
Those people had a minimum of 48 hours to move to higher ground, and instead, waited for some representative from one of the many government offices that serve them. They...
A long way back, I watched a debate on TV where one of the arguments posted was that in giving foreign aid, our country should be more selective.
The person making his argument put all countries into 3 classifications...A,B & C.
A was represented by the U.S. and was a completely self sufficient country. B was such that it was in pretty good shape and only needed a little boost now and then. C was a dirt-poor country that was going to fail no matter how much aid it received. It was then held that we were wasting resources helping C, and possibly depriving B of help, which might then allow B to become a C.
The "ObamaCare" that may be signed into law would call someone in their mid-twenties a solid A. A person in his/her 40's,...
Article I of the original 7 articles of our constitution states that the U.S. cannot bestow a title of royalty upon anyone.
If one observes the attitude of members of congress, both houses, one can readily understand why the founding fathers included that article.
These people have set themselves above the law. They ignore income tax laws; they ignore traffic laws; they cut deals with lobbyists; and in short, they have literally placed themselves apart from the population they are elected to serve.
It is far past time that we should re-write the way our elected officials should conduct themselves. I am afraid that will not happen until there is a blood-spilled revolution which will leave our country vulnerable to being taken...

All too many people associate the profits of an insurance company evil. There is nothing wrong with ANY company, insurance or otherwise....earning a profit. Most businesses start out with the intention of being profitable and unless that business earns enough money to cover operating costs and have enough left to pay a salary, the business will fail.
The government was never obligated to earn a profit and it's a foreign concept for the government to think that way. The Feds are not wired that way. Despite the difference in how private business and government works, there are those in government that propose to tell businesses how much of a profit is permissable.
When the government begins putting a cap on how much profit is...

I have argued this point with various people and having read one comment that said that person wouldn not vote for any bill of more than one hundred pages. Solution.......
One bill...one item....one page. Vote yes or no. This allows a lot of things, most of them good. It prevents obfuscation...it holds those in congress accountable....it eliminates much of the lobbying. I believe it would speed things up, since there would be less time needed to debate. One last thing...no addendums.

It matters not that one is able to download and read HR 3200. Most of what was in that has been revised. The worst thing about this is that what might emerge, has not yet been written.
Consider the following: Dems push something through; Voting public gets P.O'd and votes enough Dems out to give GOP control of the house. Dems will not lose enough seats to cede the Senate.
Nothing will get through the house for two years, Obama will be slowed.
Then...with nothing being done, the Dems will come back with a number of political ploys. They will point their fingers at the GOP and say "see....we told you they were obstructionists."
The voting public will again be disgusted and say...'They're all the same, both parties...

The people of the United States are caught in a tragic dilemma. No one can or might be inclined to argue that we should not clean up the planet. I truly believe that in the U.S. we do our part.
When the EPA was created, it sounded like a very good idea to most Americans. Those that have been APPOINTED to manage the EPA, soon realized that there was a lot of money and perks to be gained if they pushed the envelope to the nth degree in the name of making everything and everyone cleaner.
Now we find that no one can smoke indoors...in some places, not even their own cars if children are in the car and we can no longer advertise tobacco products on television. I have no dog in that fight. I have not smoked for nearly fifty years. I...
LILLY IN ILLINOIS:
Your synopsis of what happened to Limbaugh has nothing to do with his radio show, however much he grates on some folks...yourself included. It has very much to do with outrage within a group of people that have a politically correct agenda and happen to have a great deal of influence within the National Football League.
That Rush's opinion of McNabb's talent and his comments pertaining to same, may have sounded a bit too delicate for some, and it was indeed a divisive comment...but it did not touch racism. As a white person, I find it offensive to title a movie "White Men Can't Jump." It says that white men do not have the athletic ability to rebound or block shots that matches the black man. But....it is a...
Meddved is absolutely wrong. One cannot be a Conservative and present that tenet in moderate terms. You are either conservative or liberal.
The moderates are those sitting on a fence.
Stand up and have a voice, regardless of what direction the wind is blowing.
That does not mean that a conservative person should stand up and point out the many problems that liberals have, but rather to present solutions for the problems facing the country. It is high time that our elected representatives start voting for the good of the country, as opposed to voting for the good of their party.
