I am extremely grateful to my nation's troops - so much so, that I want to keep them from having to bear the brunt of terrible foreign policy decisions. Decisions which all too often are made by folks who, unlike you, have never seen war from its business end. If we listened to vets like R Paul - instead of draft dodgers like D Cheney - the world would be a much better place today.

The essay's key summation: "Never before has America been held in lower esteem by the Arab peoples of the Islamic world." Remove the words "Arab" and "Islamic", and you're bang on, Pat. I was, and remain, conservative: government must always hesitate before imposing top-down solutions. Build the infrastructure, then get out of the way. I was, and remain, opposed to the Iraq invasion. Illegal under UN law, immoral under any ethical standard, and counterproductive by any measure other than the bank accounts of war profiteers, it has branded the US in general - and US conservatives in particular - as stupid, depraved, and counterproductive. Why the GOP still pumps air into its brand-ruining "world police" carcass is beyond me.
Granting power of attorney requires both time and attention. Many medical emergencies leave little room for one or both. This change in the law would improve visitation rights. The rest of your reply is unbelievable. Do you also oppose wheelchair ramps, on the grounds that those "handicapped perverts" already have the same access to STAIRS as everybody else...?
We're talking about legal rights - as in, the right to visit a dying partner in hospital, or to employee benefits as a dependent. And - other than blind bigotry - what's the big argument against? "We understand that when everyone can marry, no one can marry. There is simply no marriage left." Here's a parallel statement: "We understand that when everyone can vote, no one can vote. There is simply no voting left." That an otherwise solid conservative political platform contains so rotten a plank is shameful.
