I guess what he's saying is: the death of thousands is frowned upon by the president. What about the red line? Oh, it got whited out, ok.

It had to be WIDESPREAD usage of chemical weapons - right now, Assad is only using them in small areas at a time...so he's close to the redline but not quite over it yet. Listen to the way Obama minces words - he leaves such wiggle room. He's not got the full proof, yet, that Assad has actually ordered the usage of the chemical weapons - the investigation is still ongoing so he cannot act. He does not want to create another Iraq war (never ending and started over a lie).
