TV is a large segment of 'commercial culture.' It is obviously going to serve every niche where money can be found, including the art-pervert niche. But popular culture is families and kids, burgers and french-fries, beer on the patio, church on Sunday, weddings and Christmas, and everything else that people do amid widespread social approval. I'm arguing this point because I want to recapture 'popular culture' for people back from the TV/media/entertainment industry. The term asserts the collective power of self-rule, and distances the public from the self-interested class of cultural entrepreneurs that reside in Hollywood, NY and in the post-grad chattering class.
