Our diocese used to encourage participation in the Respect Life Sunday life-chains where we stood along major highways with signs encouraging Choose Life, and discouraging abortion. In the past decade or so, homilies on Respect Life Sunday rarely mention abortion. So sad that the Church has become so cowardly and silent that it will not even dare to speak for the most helpless, voiceless, and innocent among us. So sad that it is necessary to have a group called Priests For Life--shouldn't ALL priests be FOR LIFE?

Most of America's problems are cultural. Even our economic problems stem from the cultural rejection of personal responsibility and the acceptance of collective responsibility. And none of our problems would be as bad if the church was still shaping the culture instead of merely responding to it. I was reminded of this during my annual holiday trip home to The Woodlands, Texas.
