Uh, HELLO? How about simple self-defense? I don't hunt. I fire my revolver simply for practice. I DON'T do it for enjoyment. I DO it to improve my chances of defending myself. A healthy fear drives my desire for self-preservation. I have never fired my weapon on any living entity, human or animal. Yet, I am prepared to kill any entity that poses a threat to my life.

The "well regulated militia" was understood by the framers of the constitution as the entire population of men and boys who were expected to take up arms and defend home, family, and country, from any danger. That includes self defence. Also, today, there are many women who have 'taken up arms' and would now be part of the militia.
