Someone please put the crazy old guy out to pasture...
Lowering standards in order to get more persons of any particular group, either gender or racially based, into police work is just plain stupid. The better approach, is to do more recruiting of qualified candidates. But, there are some huge hurdles there. The biggest problem in getting more people from any given minority group into cop work is not one that police have any control over though, and that is the ingrained community attitude toward the cops, and this goes for a number of communities. Many Asian immigrants, especially those from southeast Asia, are fearful of the cops because of preconceived notions they bring here from their country of origin, and they teach those fears to their kids. Blacks and Hispanics from inner city neighborhoods neither like nor trust the cops, and teach their kids the same attitudes. Russian (and most other former Soviet countries) immigrants also have significant dislike for law enforcement, and that attitude makes its way from one generation to the next. When people are being raised to hate the cops, is it any wonder that none of them grow up wanting to be cops?
