Dr. Sowell once again has written a magnificent piece that explains his point simply and concisely. A couple additional points on unions: 1. Unions care a lot less about the well-being of individual employees than management does. 2. Work rules (as described in Sowell's piece) are not the only waste perpetrated by unions. Union stewards, grievance procedures, union meetings on company time - all add cost but no value.

A union member of the NEA gets two-three periods a day free for union work while paid full salary and benefits.

Fulll-time union NEA and/or affiliate employees who haven't been in a classroom for decades still get their contract salary plus benefits.

Full-time politicians still holding certification and union contracts get their pol. salary and perks PLUS all the teacher salary and perks.

Whadda wonderful system.

Killing the goose that lays the golden egg is one of those old fairy tales for children which has a heavy message that a lot of adults should listen to. The labor unions which have driven the makers of Twinkies into bankruptcy, potentially destroying 18,500 jobs, could have learned a lot from that old children's fairy tale.
