There have been more than two big mistakes. Absolutely we should have identified our enemy clearly. And no, we should not set any deadlines for withdrawal w/o victory, which leads to another mistake. We haven't fought this war to win, we have fought just enough of a war to maintain the lead. The whole notion of limited war and surgical strikes is political nonsense. We won WW2 by going in, fighting aggressively, and killing until nobody was shooting back. The war against radical Islam will not be won until there is a fundamental transformation of Islamic society. Realistically, that means inflicting a WW2-style defeat on the people that is so gut-wrenching the survivors won't dare think the same thoughts that brought destruction.
