If you're serious about deficit reduction, a mallet or hammer will not do. Bring a chain saw or two. Actually, what is needed is a POTUS with the cojones to tell his cabinet "This year, each of you will spend 10% less than last year and if you tell me that you can't do it, I'll find someone else who can" then follow through. This kind of cost cutting happens all the time in the private sector, there is no reason that gubmint cannot do so as well.

Where is the incentive to do that when the can just reduce the rate of growth by 10% and make the same claim?

Peas are all the rage when it comes to talking about the country’s fiscal woes.

You might remember that in July of 2011, when fighting over the debt ceiling, president Obama- right before he left for his 17th vacation at Martha’s Vineyard that year- complained about congressional inaction by saying that’s it time for the country “to eat its peas.”
