According to Howard Dean, going off the cliff would be a leftie's wet dream. They'd get higher taxes on everyone and huge defense cuts beyond what the normal budget process could ever produce. He knows that doing this will probably cause a steep recession, but he thinks that throwing the economy into the toilet is a small price for those tax hikes and defense cuts. He probably believes that the Dems can devise a strategy to take non defense spending cuts off the table.

I’m very concerned about both the fiscal cliff and its possible replacements. It will be bad news if we get an automatic tax hike on January 1, and it will be bad news if that tax increase is replaced by an even more odious plan concocted by the White House.

But the cliff is not our biggest fiscal problem.
