The electric car didn't work our for the Baker brothers a century ago, nor did the GM EV-1 25 years ago. Admittedly, the EV-1 was just a small scale experiment it did demonstrate the impracticality of electric vehicles for anything but niche applications. Large scale adoption of electric vehicles in a relatively short time would cause the grid to collapse under the additional load.

A Congressional Budget Office report released in the fall tells Obama what the rest of us have known for some time: Your bet on electric cars wasn’t an investment, but a gamble; a dumb gamble.
