Ross Perot helped elect Billy Clinton twice. Clinton never garnered more than a plurality of votes in his two elections.

Lincoln won his first election due to a third party splitting the Democrat vote.

A third party of conservatives would simply guarantee Jackazz Party victories.

And because the Democrats split. Under the rules of the day the nominee had to win a super-majority in convention. No one did, so the Northern Democrats ran Stephen Douglas in the north, and the Southern Democrats ran VP John Breckinridge in the south.
