My parents could easily afford that. But no room & board so I could drink beer every night and then fail my classes. I lived at home and commuted 14 miles back and forth in my old clunker car. I graduated in four years with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. My parents even looked into a student loan in about my third year. But back then unless you could show near poverty, you couldn't get one. I went on to a fairly successful career in engineering. I'm guessing that if I had graduated from a more prestiguous college, I may have earned $1K to $2K extra per year in the early days. But it all washes out with time, because you eventually earn what you're worth.

Does it make sense for the government to take taxes from the big majority of Americans who never managed to win college degrees in order to subsidize the pricey education of the fortunate few who get to attend top universities?

Why is it fair to increase burdens on stressed-out working families so the feds can reduce future interest payments on student loans for members of the elite?
