Thank you, Tom, for sharing this story. We all need to remember those who were so influential in our young lives. I'd like to think that the influence had eternal consequences.
Cal, that's one of the reasons that I enjoy following your columns; you actually understand where you fit in God's creation! Your humility and willingness to admit that you committed a human error is a great example to all. Thanks for sharing...

Thanks, Brent, for a great story...about a great philanthropic conservative businessman!
It has been reiterated so many times how illegal immigration has affected every taxpayer that you would have to have been in a cave in Afghanistan to not know the answer to your own stupid question!
Where did you come up with this magic number of $500? And how much of it would be spent by insurance companies to comply with bazillion onerous government regulations and requirements, adding NOTHING to the average Joe's ability to be treated? No one is arguing that the desperately poor or catastrophically ill should not be helped, but only whether the FEDERAL government should be so heavily involved with the incredible additional costs that generates. What about the uninsured? A large percentage DON'T WANT to pay for insurance; isn't that their right? For God's sake, who made you the savior of all the downtrodden? Talk about talking points; all yours are liberal ones, meaning without original thought.
Do the rest of you wonder, as I do, WHY Carter thinks that he is relevant in any way? He's an embarrassment of a Christian and can no longer (if he ever did) discern fact from fantasy.
Nice response, Jon!
Well, None, I would suggest a model that removed the exorbitant cost of complying with burdensome federal regulations and reporting from medical providers. I would also suggest a model that worked very well in the past; individuals paid out-of-pocket for their health care needs and doctors didn't have to maintain an employee whose sole job was to process insurance claims and report to the feds. Now, don't get your knickers in a twist...as a very conservative conservative, even I know that some people have to deal with catastrophic medical events in their lives without the ability to pay. Talking to my doctor the other day; I was astounded to find out how much pro bono service he provided. That would happen more if doctors could afford it.
It's taking him a long time to figure out what you're talking about!! So funny!
Thank you to the voters of NYC and Nevada! I never could figure out why ANYONE could support liberal policies. Like others who have posted earlier, enjoy the wins, Republicans, but if you're not conservative enough to maintain the momentum, guess whose necks will be on the block? You really don't seem to understand just how p-o'd we rank and file citizens are at you politicos!!
