I never heard of Aiken until this controversy blew up. I understand Aiken has been in Congress a long time. Is he on record making other dumb statements? Anyone know?

He served 12 years in the House, which means that his District re-elected him 5 times. This makes it unlikely that he has a history of offending his constituency.

He attended the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts earning a degree in Management Engineering, and in 1984 he earned a Master of Divinity degree at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis.

"Dumb statements"? How about:
He called Obama “a flaming socialist”
“America has got the equivalent of the stage three cancer of socialism.”
“I don’t find it in the Constitution that it is the job of the government to provide health care.”

You tell me how "dumb" those quotes are.

By now his remarks are familiar, but just in case ...

Akin told a local TV interviewer: "First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare." He continued: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

My own take is that there's a dual-core of asininity here. First, Akin's formulation makes it sound...
