I found a very old History book of the US--1885. Not corrupted by revisionist changes. It mentioned several early communities in the 1600s that tried the collectivism/socialism form of government. Within a few years the people were starving and they adopted a capitalist form of government and succeeded.

IMO government handouts should only be given on a long term basis to those who are incapable of providing of themselves not to the mearly lazy. Short term help could be given to those who have fallen on hard times. Now it is a very difficult line to draw as to who are the incapable, who have fallen on hard times and those whose hard times are of their own making. Which is why any help for the poor needs to be administered on as local a level as possible. Those in the same community are usually better able to distinguish the above groups of people from each other.
