Union "Victory": Chrysler Reinstates 13 Workers Fired for Drinking on the Job

This particular incident got headlines because of the tax payer bailout of Chrysler, but as a supervisor in a unionized industrial setting for more than 35 years, I can tell you that this sort of thing goes on all the time. And you may be surprised to know that a very few (less than 3%) employees act like this. The problem is that management spends 90% of its time dealing with that 3%. Conversely, the union spends 90% of its time defending that 3%.

And, as far as arbitration goes, it's a joke. The so-called Impartial Arbitrator is paid by both the union and the company. He or she knows where their bread is buttered. In this case it was the union's turn for a win. But it was a HUGE win because of the publicity. That arbitrator can now give the company a dozen wins because the union knows they "Owe Him/Her" for this one. That's how it works.

The following story proves what common sense has long ago suggested, that unions have outlived any possible usefulness and they are also hugely counterproductive to the goal of getting any work done.

Please consider the Detroit News article Chrysler reinstates 13 workers fired for drinking on job.

Chrysler Group LLC says it was forced to reinstate 13 workers who were fired from its Jefferson North Assembly Plant two years ago after being filmed by a local television station...
