Scott, my history of the GOP explains that Lincoln did not break with the radical wing of the Republican Party. In fact, he moved toward it toward the end of his presidency. He had little to do with the GOP rebranding itself in 1864 as "National Union" - which the party leadership did in order to attract pro-Union independents.
