What’s the Better Role Model, France or Switzerland?

Ultimately - it is the voters who believe that there is a Free Lunch who are to blame. Politicians will do what it takes to get re-elected, so they work hard to make the voters happy. Politicians recognize that "Santa Claus" gets more votes than a miserly grump who insists on adherence to the Constitution. When voters decide that the collapse in our country's financial and moral condition are due to straying from the precepts of the Constitution and the voters then vote for politicians to follow the Constitution - THEN AND ONLY THEN can we expect that politicians will actually honor the oath that they take to follow the Constitution. It's the voters, stupid. (Or rather...It is the stupid voters!)

At the European Resource Bank conference earlier this month, Pierre Bessard from Switzerland’s Institut Liberal spoke on a panel investigating “The Link between the Weight of the State and Economic prosperity.”
