Is Liberal Christianity Worth Saving?

The way Connor describes it, the traditional Christianity is not worth saving! The third and fourth paragraphs are most telling. The "core tenets" of Christianity, as he explains them, are ridiculous, and cannot be reasonably believed by anyone who has considered them thoughtfully (as opposed to blind-faithfully). It is not anything "liberal" that is causing the demise of Christianity, but rather, it is people thinking: actually reading the Bible and finding it horrifying (because they refuse to blindly accept "faith" justifications of the atrocities); considering the clergy as people rather than as something approaching infallible saints; etc.

You are confusing "moral" with "meaningful". Does being "moral", as defined by the codes of your religion, provide your life with meaning? You may be right that morality cannot be objectively defined (I can't do it, so I'll give you that point) - but that does not mean that it requires a religion or a deity to define it subjectively. Anyone could just as easily define morality as, for example, "murder is wrong on Thursdays" or "murder is wrong unless you are murdering an infidel / rapist / Yankees' fan / whatever". That morality could be based on anything; no religion / deity required. Similarly, perhaps some people believe life would be meaningless without God. I disagree - my life is plenty meaningful to me.

Why would you think that? I'm not at all angry at "God". I'm irritated by many believers, but indeed - I could no more be "angry at God" than be angry at the Tooth Fairy.

"But the atheist ... who denies the consequences of atheism is as worthy of the same intellectual respect atheists have for those who believe in a six thousand-year-old universe." WRONG! Consequences are prediction, projection, anticipated, estimated, complex - not factually proven. There exist a plethora of evidence for a much older than 6000 year old universe, and those who believe in it are denying facts, believing in spite of the evidence.

Should have let the boson in. It was only going to stick around for a very very very very very short time anyway.

The line "honest atheists recognize that a godless world means a meaningless one" simply indicates that Prager is, like many Christians, completely patronizing towards atheists and doesn't even realize what a rude fool he is being. Try taking the word "God" from this article and replacing it with "Allah", "Buddha", "Vishnu", "Zeus", or any of the many other deities that humanity has worshipped over the world and centuries -- and now it sounds pretty rude to Christians, doesn't it? Mr. Prager, please, leave science to the scientists, and take your Christian proselytizing and apologetics back to your church.

Prager *almost* nails it. Conservative gays *should* (and usually are) welcomed in the Republican Party. What he misses is that conservative same-sex marriage activists should *also* be welcomed.
