Know one knows what would happen if no deal is reached and the country plunges over the "fiscal cliff". Everyone assumes that it would be bad. Why? Because taxes would go up on EVERYONE. By the Democrats' logic, if taxing the rich is "good", wouldn't taxing EVERYONE be better? By the same token, cuts in Federal spending HAVE to be made. If the politicians don't have the courage to do it, some formulaic method is necessary because spending has to be cut. There isn't any other way to make progress on reducing the deficit and debt.

The 'fiscal cliff' is not that big a deal, really. Sure, the tax increase will suck, a lot, particularly considering the crappy economy. But the spending cuts are a drop in the bucket. Like a billion dollars or so in a multi trillion dollar budget. Hardly crippling.

One of Democrats' enduring, systemic political advantages a mainstream media whose levers are overwhelmingly controlled by people who agree with them on most issues.  But sometimes Democrats push their luck, and many in the press cannot help but notice.  In the midst of a deluge of Republicans showing flexibility on "revenues" -- for better or worse -- Democrats have thus far been unwilling to commit to, well, much of anything at all.  Compromises require real, tangible concessions from both sides, and a number of MSM stalwarts are beginning to point out that Democrats aren't doing...
