Most of them became neo-conservatives, the ones who persuaded Dubya to invade Iraq. Those who see a bigger role for government are not marxists. They just think that there are things in society tht are better done by the state; like the highway system, or healthcare. The government runs many things that people lik: Medicare and Medicaid; Veterans Administration... Marxism means that the state owns all the means of production, like all the factories. That isn't even true in Europe. So, if you want to have more credibility, and real debate, choose your terms with a bit more reality.
