Great article. Another part of the story on infant mortality is the different standards used by countries to count a birth as "live." Many countries count a baby as "stillborn" (or not born at all) if it's delivered before 25 weeks or even later. The US enters every live-born baby as a "birth" and if the premature infant dies later, our infant mortality rate goes down. I have yet to see a comparison of infant mortality rates that accounts for the different methods of categorizing births.
