"Europe has arrived at where we are headed." You have it backwards. American taxpayers and armed forces have always rescued Europe despite itself, and they will again. But no other country or consortium thereof would rescue us if it could. We have already gone over the cliff, though the fools in Washington don't realize it. Then, the good times weren't over. In fact, they were coming back, with the Reagan recovery, the renewal of the American spirit and the end of a Cold War that had consumed so much of our lives.

Yet whoever wins today, it is hard to be sanguine about the future.
