After a while you begin to wonder if Republicans are complicit in creating the liberal nanny state. How can anyone be so stupid for so long?

I began wondering that a few years ago when I held rank in the local Republican Party. A few of us saw where it was going and tried to stop it, with no avail. I then realized that the GOP while preaching different goals and a few different ends basically went along with the same means as Democrats...use government.

So many people are fooled by the GOP in believing all their "small, limited government" talk. Take it from me, they will use government just as much as the Dems will to acheive their goals.

So the hard part is to realize this and to honestly ask yourself if you will continue to go along with the plan because you so desparately want to reach the goals. Very hard decision to make, but I did it.

That is the conclusion I finally reached, also. The Republican Party wants to control us, too, just in different ways from the Democrats. The Republicans also enjoy spending (see George W. Bush) our money about as much as Democrats; they just differ on their pet programs.
The beginning of a new year is often a time to look forward and look back. The way the future looks, I prefer to look back -- and depend on my advanced age to spare me from having to deal with too much of the future.

If there are any awards to be given to anyone for what they did in 2012, one of those rewards should be for prophecy, if only because prophecies that turn out to be right are so rare.

With that in mind, my choice for the prediction of the year award goes to Bret Stephens of the Wall...
