With Politics Above All

In the long term, the Earth may be warming slightly, it has in the past, but the evidence in the last decade indicates that it has slowed at the very least. In the 1970’s there was concern that we were moving into an ice age, then the scientists decided that we were getting hotter. When facts stopped fitting the model, they fudged the data, credibility gone. The point is, if we are getting warmer in the long term, it most likely isn’t due to our activity. With evidence that other planets have also warmed, it might just be that big bright thing that shows up every morning.

Politics above science; politics above economics—together these two philosophies have created “true sustainability.”

We first saw the impact in the science world. Global warming was touted as a catastrophic threat to life on earth. Modern life was deemed to be the cause. More specifically, the blame fell to the burning of hydrocarbons—which are the source of the abundant, affordable, and available energy that has given the developed world its many advantages and luxuries. Carbon footprint guilt was heaped upon big energy-consuming countries. After all, we were ruining the planet.

Change was needed to slow the rise of the oceans.
