It could be because if the Police and Firefighters responded to his proposals in the same manner as the teachers, Wisconsin would be in a world of hurt. While firefighters and police are not supposed to strike, I'm sure you are familiar with the "blue flu". I have heard that in a show of solidarity with the teachers, the police in Madison have refused to do crowd control. Imagine if police and firefighters throughout the state decided not to do their jobs.
While the constitution did create a central government. That government was extremely limited. The Constitution was created to specifically list the powers granted to the federal government leaving the rest the states and the people therein.
Thomas Jefferson was commenting on the "natural progress" of things; he wasn't making a judgment on whether the natural progress is good or bad. He is just stating what is. It's a stretch to claim that Jefferson was a big government guy.

The Obama Administration declared DOMA unconstitutional? Please explain how the executive branch can declare anything unconstitutional. Isn't that the role of the judiciary?

The "hostile management" of which you speak is the taxpayers. They are tired of bloated compensation packages and ridiculous work rules. They are tired of being forced to pay others more than they are making themselves for services they may or may not want.

With vouchers parents could avoid the "shockingly bad" private schools as well as the religious schools they may find objectionable. Schools that perform would received more money and those that don't perform would close. Vouchers would give all children the opportunity for a quality education.

Jodi, From what you said, I would want you to teach my children and, as a talented teacher, you should be paid more than those who are not. Unfortunately under the current system that does not happen. Vouchers would be a step in the right direction.

2011's Uncharted Political Waters

If Republicans win Congress in November I don't think a "good faith effort" is good enough. After all it was Republicans who started us down the road we are on. They need to prove they are capable of governing within the constraints of the Constitution. Up to this point, Republicans, even so-called conservatives, have been a dismal failure at this. If Republicans do not govern this way they should be voted out in the next election.
Again, you're missing the point. It isn't about who lies, who is a hypocrite, etc. It's about whether or not Congress has the right to demand that citizens answer the government for their personal behavior. I am astounded that no one seems bothered about that.
