Well, Jerry, the liberal critics you speak of should soon be singing the praises of Downton Abbey. The series has just started promoting homosexuality.

Mark, they haven't started "promoting" it, they highlighted the footman's proclivities in the first series (season here in the US) before he went off to war and shot himself in the hand to get out of the trenches. Having had that backstory reemerge in this, the third series, is bringing up the abhorrence of such activities in what then was considered a moral society (regardless of what other immoralities were tolerated).

Otherwise, it is an excellent show and, like all entertainment, is even more worth watching if the critics don't like it.

They've had a gay character on there since the first season.

The first thing to do is to admit that I’m a Downton Abbey fan. In fact, I’ve watched every episode twice. But in my defense, I counterbalance my Downtonviewings with at least one hour spent with my chainsaw for every hour tuned into Masterpiece Classic.

One of the first things one notices, if one is a regular viewer of BBC productions, is that Downton is unusually ideologically and religiously balanced. One of the other effects one notices when one watches a lot of BBC is that one starts referring to oneself in the third rather than the first person....
