Mr. Root, A very good article, but I have to disagree with the following: "Should we do more to ensure that all gun owners are licensed, trained, responsible and mentally competent? Of course." Really? You think all gun owners should be licensed? Read this, from the Nazi's law: "All citizens who wished to purchase firearms had to register with the Nazi officials and have a background check." This requirements gives the government a good list of probable gun owners, and lets the government decide who should, and who shouldn't, get to own arms. They can keep firearms out of the hands of undesirables like "right-wing extremists", "Tea-baggers", and anyone else they deem a threat. Maybe even Jews.

Ah, I don't remember reading anything about that in the Constitution. The government decided not to tax churches because churches are good, and are supposed to be non-profit. Same with charity giving. But the government should not be using the tax code to reward "good" behavior, or to punish "bad" behavior. THAT is un-Constitutional.

You're right. There are a lot of conservatives who have libertarian leanings. And we don't care who marries who. In fact, we don't think the government should have anything to do with marriage. Live your life as you wish, and let me live my life as I wish.
